It’s too cold, too wet, the roads too gritty and the potholes too big to start the third season of Saint Paul By Bike. I don’t enjoy riding when the weather is in the 30s or 40s. If that makes me a wimp, so be it-I’ve been called worse.

Nevertheless, it’s a great time to get ready to ride. I got my bike tuned up last November so that’s done. This weekend I prepped with some new accessories. I bought a shiny new water bottle (red to match my bike.)

Then I charged, updated software and configured the new bike GPS my friend Rucksie gave me. (Yes, I lead an exciting life.) The GPS will be a tremendous addition to my rides. Most importantly it will keep track of exactly where I ride and the mileage, making the ride and post-ride more efficient. No need for the small notebook where I write each and every street and turn so there is an accurate record of each ride and no longer will I have to manually plot my routes before posting them. On top of that, the GPS tracks my speed, calories expended and elevation of the route.

The Garmin GPS will lessen the organization necessary to keep track of my rides.

There will always be potholes to worry about so it’s a matter of getting the snow to melt and at least some of the puddles to shrink. At this point, I’m guessing the first ride will come about April 13-just under three weeks from now. Until then, I’ll do my best to keep riding in the basement.

  1. Wolfie, don’t be concentrating on your GPS to the extent that you hit one of those pot holes, slip on the wet gravel, wreck that shiny new red water bottle and your beautiful body…
